Boondocking.org You may have noticed, our wonderful National Forests really like to charge you for primitive camping. But did you know, usually just a mile or two away from the 'developed' campground, you can find a secluded spot in your National Forest that's perfectly legal to camp? Many times, in these National Forest campgrounds, campsites often have nothing more than a pit toilet and a fire pit with a grill. The way I've set up my travel rig, I only need a flat spot to park. The great outdoors (used responsibly of course) serves as my toilet, and my stove serves as my cookery. Why pay for camping for nothing more than a stinky pit toilet, when just a few miles away, you can legally camp in a secluded spot?

Phred's Boondocking Info This poop sheet came from 20 years of boondocking experience in U.S., Mexico and Canada and articles that appeared in Escapees Magazine. Boondocking is not really a good term, but has somehow come into common use. Dry Camping (parking anywhere without or with limited amenities) is more accurate. Independent Parking is the preferred term. It means that you are prepared to dry camp but make use of amenities when they're available. Being prepared to live independently is what it's all about, then you're free to do what you want to do.

See Ya' Down The Road - Boondocking Tips Norm & Linda Payne's tips for boondocking overnight or for weeks at a time. There are many definitions of boondocking among RVers. Some people say they are boondocking if they have electric but don't have water and sewer hookups. Others say to boondock one has to be out in the boonies. I say boondocking is camping without any hookups - no electric, water or sewer. I went to the expert of words and found Webster's New World Dictionary does not list the word boondocking. Mr. Webster does list boon as 'welcome benefit; blessing; merry; convivial.' Then he goes on to explain that boondocks is 'a jungle or wilderness; any remote rural region.'

The Rolling Home - Boondocking with us After over two years of fulltiming, we thought we would put down on paper (ok, on the screen) what we have learned from our own and others boondocking experiences. (written mostly in 2001, we are now coming up on four complete years of fulltiming in August of 2003. First, if you are looking to fulltime on the cheap, consider being a boondocker. The cost to stay overnight can range from nothing to about $10 in boondocking spaces. We prefer the free areas! Besides, if you are boondocked for free, you don't have to pick a site next to the ubiquitous railroad track or interstate highway.
